DFER DC Appoints New State Director
Ramin Taheri to Lead Work to Improve Equitable Outcomes for D.C. Students
WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 23, 2020)—Democrats for Education Reform District of Columbia (DFER-DC) announced today that Ramin Taheri will join the team as the new State Director for the chapter, as well as its affiliate organization Education Reform Now DC.
In his role, Ramin will lead DFER-DC’s ongoing work to create a more equitable public education system for DC students and families by collaborating with local communities, the Mayor, DC Council, and the State Board of Education to advance strong policies to improve public education. DFER-DC’s priorities include enhancing current policies to fund all public schools more equitably, increasing equitable access to excellent public schools, and electing strong leaders who will advocate for all of DC’s students.
“As a DCPS parent and long-time DC resident, it is deeply important to me that every child in every ward is provided a high-quality public education that will open up lifelong opportunities to them,” said Ramin. “I believe our work at DFER is critical to achieving that vision—especially now in this time of unprecedented uncertainty for our families and community.”
Ramin most recently came from Chiefs for Change—a network of state and city education leaders focused on improving public education—where he served as Director of Advocacy and Policy. Prior to that role, he worked in the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Education. Ramin also worked for three years as a senior-level policy advisor in the U.S. Department of Education during the Obama Administration. He brings with him a deep commitment to public service and education policy, as well as strong experience working in the DC political sphere. Ramin will join DFER-DC Deputy Director Jess Giles, who has led the chapter since July 2019.
DFER-DC was launched in January 2015 with the goal of continuing and accelerating the reforms that have made the District of Columbia the most rapidly improving urban district in the nation. Learn more about the organization here.

DFER’s mission is to ensure that Democrats pursue education policies that enable all students, particularly students from low-income families and students of color, to obtain a competitive education that empowers them to fulfill their limitless potential. This includes advancing the work of other organizations, such as our affiliate Education Reform Now.
