New York, NY (July 21, 2024) – Today, DFER CEO Jorge Elorza released the following statement in response to President Biden’s decision to not seek re-election:

“President Biden’s decision to step down as the Democratic nominee for President marks a historic moment for our nation and exemplifies the selflessness he has displayed throughout his career in public service. This is an example that our students—future leaders themselves—can look to as a model of true leadership.

President Biden and Congress made historic investments in education to address learning loss exacerbated by the pandemic, supporting much-needed programs like high-impact tutoring and other critical resources. The administration also championed higher education access and affordability, including substantial support for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and initiatives to make college and career opportunities accessible and affordable for all students and their families.

We extend our deepest gratitude to President Biden for his lifelong service to our country and for his exceptional leadership throughout his presidency. As we look to the future, I call on all Democratic leaders to rally around a new nominee who will reaffirm our party’s commitment to a student-centered agenda, one that is focused on innovation, quality, and giving every family high-quality public school options to choose from. By building on the foundation laid by prior Democratic leaders, we can—and will—advance educational equity for every child in America.”
