DFER Releases Statement on President-elect Biden’s Nomination of Dr. Miguel Cardona as Education Secretary

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Dec. 22, 2020)— Democrats for Education Reform National President Shavar Jeffries released the following statement today in response to the nomination of Connecticut Commissioner of Education Dr. Miguel Cardona as the next U.S. Secretary of Education.

“DFER congratulates Commissioner Cardona on his nomination as the next U.S. Secretary of Education. Dr. Cardona has distinguished himself as a strong advocate for equity who will put students and families first. His fight for educational opportunity is not just professional, but deeply personal. Dr. Cardona has experienced firsthand the challenges that many of our nation’s historically underserved students face, having grown up as an English-learner and a first-generation college graduate.

We are hopeful that, as Secretary of Education, Dr. Cardona will continue to bring new ideas and diverse perspectives to the table to address the longstanding opportunity gaps that have now been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. We look forward to working together with Dr. Cardona in his new role in service of a more equitable education system for all of our nation’s students.”
