DFER National President Releases Statement on Teacher Appreciation Week
May 6, 2019
New York, N.Y. (May 6, 2019) – Democrats for Education Reform (DFER) National President Shavar Jeffries released the following statement in recognition of Teacher Appreciation Week and the service of our nation’s teachers:
“Teachers have the power to shape the future and to transform our children’s lives. They are mentors, coaches, counselors, and fill many other roles both in and outside the classroom. They deserve much more than our thanks; this week, and every week, our teachers deserve to be treated as the professionals they are.
As a nation, we must make greater investments in our teachers, from increasing pay for all teachers and providing pay differentials for teachers in high-needs schools and subjects to improving teacher preparation programs so that teachers are ready for the classroom on day one.
We also must elevate teachers’ voices—from the schoolhouse to the statehouse—so they are part of the policy decisions that impact their daily lives and their ability to meet their students’ needs.
Teachers are the number one in-school influence on student achievement. I would not be where am I today without my grandmother, a public school teacher, and the countless teachers who believed in me along the way. Let’s show our gratitude by celebrating those teachers who’ve made such an impact on our lives not only this Teacher Appreciation Week, but every day.”
