Leslie Leavoy to Lead Advocacy Work for Louisiana Students
NEW ORLEANS, L.A. (April 27, 2020)— Democrats for Education Reform Louisiana (DFER-LA) announced today that Leslie Leavoy will serve as the chapter’s new director, as well as director for its affiliate organization, Education Reform Now LA (ERN-LA).
Leslie will lead on DFER-LA’s mission to advance policies that improve equitable outcomes for low-income students and students of color and support political candidates who are dedicated to creating better opportunities for all students.
“These are harrowing times for my community here in New Orleans, and throughout our state, as we, once again, face unprecedented uncertainty and loss, this time due to COVID-19,” said Leslie. “More than ever, our work is critical to ensure that our students don’t suffer additional setbacks to their education and that Louisiana can continue to forge a path of progress toward educational excellence and serving all students equitably, no matter their zip code.”
Given the current COVID-19 crisis, DFER-LA is specifically focused on pursuing resource equity in the form of expanded internet infrastructure and access for students; stable funding both at the state and local level; and improvements to the state’s rigorous accountability system to prevent students from backsliding because of disruptions to classroom learning. “The team will also be heavily engaged in the work to support students both in the short and the long-term COVID-19 recovery,” said Leslie.
Leslie joined DFER-LA as Deputy State Director in 2016 and was appointed Acting Director in 2019. She previously served on the communications team for Pew Research Center and as Deputy Press Secretary to former U.S. Senator Mary L. Landrieu (D-LA).
DFER-LA was established in 2015 as part of the national organization, Democrats for Education Reform (DFER), a Political Action Committee that supports Democrats and candidates committee to making public education more equitable. DFER’s mission is to ensure that Democrats pursue education policies that enable all students, particularly students from low-income families and students of color, to obtain a competitive education that empowers them to fulfill their limitless potential. This includes advancing the work of other organizations, such as our affiliate Education Reform Now.
