Crisanta Duran to Lead Work to Improve Equitable Outcomes for NY Students
NEW YORK, N.Y. (March 30, 2020)— Democrats for Education Reform New York (DFER-NY) announced today that Crisanta Duran will serve as the chapter’s new director, as well as director for its affiliate organization, Education Reform Now NY (ERN-NY).
Crisanta will continue DFER-NY’s mission to improve educational equity in New York State, with a priority focus on supporting students—particularly low-income students and students of color—during the COVID-19 pandemic and throughout their eventual transition back into the classroom. She’ll also lead on DFER’s commitment to maintaining a Democratic majority in the Assembly and Senate in the upcoming 2020 elections.
“Now more than ever, we need strong leadership for New York’s students to not only tackle the persistent inequities that have long driven unequal outcomes for students, but to create a new path forward in the aftermath of the COVID-19 crisis,” said Crisanta. “I look forward to working with electeds and advocates across our state to ensure a brighter future for all of our students—regardless of who they are or where they grow up.”
Before moving to New York, Crisanta, served in the Colorado legislature for eight years, where she held the distinction of being the first Latina Speaker of the House. A strong advocate for educational equity, Crisanta passed legislation to address funding equity, carried a bill to expand in-state tuition to undocumented students and created workforce development pathways to ensure students and their families have access to economic security.
DFER-NY was established in 2007 to advocate for educational equity for nearly 3 million students in New York public schools.
DFER-NY is part of the national organization, Democrats for Education Reform (DFER), a Political Action Committee that supports Democrats and candidates committee to making public education more equitable. DFER’s mission is to ensure that Democrats pursue education policies that enable all students, particularly students from low-income families and students of color, to obtain a competitive education that empowers them to fulfill their limitless potential. This includes advancing the work of other organizations, such as our affiliate Education Reform Now.
