DFER LA Releases Statement on 2019 School Performance Scores
Much to be celebrated, much more work to do to ensure all students succeed
NEW ORLEANS, LA – Following this morning’s release of the 2018-2019 school and district performance scores (SPS) from the Louisiana Department of Education, Democrats for Education Reform Louisiana (DFER LA) State Director Eva Kemp released the following statement:
“Today’s release of the school and district performance scores show many data points to be celebrated, and just as many data points to motivate our system to continue improving and serving our students. Not only have the distribution of district performance scores moved more positive, but this is the first year that we’re able to fully evaluate the implementation of Louisiana’s plan pursuant to the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA),” said Kemp.
Most notably, of the 219 schools identified for support under our ESSA plan, 36% improved performance by three or more points, and 40% of schools’ performance scores remained steady. Moreover, and similar to last year, 453 schools across the state have been recognized as earning ‘Top Gains’ status and 197 schools have been recognized as ‘Equity Honorees.’ Of the 14 persistently struggling schools in East Baton Rouge Parish, 12 increased their school performance score. And probably the most exciting piece: There are now no failing schools on the Westbank in Orleans Parish.
“The DFER team is particularly excited to celebrate significant improvements in New Orleans and Baton Rouge,” said Kemp. “Specifically, both Orleans and East Baton Rouge parishes district performance scores increased, and several schools in each district boasted increased performance scores and progress indices. These facts show that the recent changes to curriculum, the accountability system, and teacher preparation have led to real progress in classrooms. Students are improving academically, and schools are bettering their services to key subgroups. We must continue to build on these improvements to ensure each and every student across Louisiana is prepared for success upon graduation.”
This year’s school and district performance scores, as well as scores and information on early childhood care and education providers, have been reported on the Louisiana Department of Education’s School Finder website.
