Education Stories That CT Dems Are Watching
September 27, 2018
Clashing Candidates
We’ve seen two debates so far (here and here) between CT gubernatorial hopefuls Ned Lamont and Bob Stefanowski. Ironically, while the third debate is slated for tonight at the UConn campus, neither candidate is promising more funding to the University of Connecticut. On the issue of education, Stefanowski’s platform aims at reducing the number of graduates who move out of state, while Lamont prioritizes early education, K-12 education, vo-tech training, and affordable higher education. The latest poll shows Lamont leading by 6 points, with a particular edge among women.
Defining Malloy’s Education Legacy
With elections underway, some are looking at the Malloy administration’s legacy, and the results of his education policies are still trickling in. On Friday, officials announced that AP scores are continuing to improve, with “qualified” scores up 3.8% since the 2016-17 school year. On the Smarter Balanced assessment, Commissioner Wentzell has described scores as being on “an upward trend,” albeit slower than she’d like.
Blumenthal Vets Supreme Court Pick
During tomorrow’s Kavanaugh-Ford hearing, be prepared for CT Senator Richard Blumenthal to question the character of the would-be Supreme Court Justice, based on mounting allegations. A Yale Law alum, Blumenthal joined 300 Yale students this week, as they staged a sit-in. He says the Senate cannot vote on the Kavanaugh nomination without a full, fair investigation. We are grateful for his leadership during this contentious process.
